Headshots and Portraits

A headshot is a practical image: it should be current, professional, and suited to the way you use it. Every session begins with that purpose in mind. 

You do not need to know how to pose — I’ll guide you. I use careful body positioning and lighting that shapes the face to create images that are flattering, yet natural, and unmistakably you. We’ll also pay close attention to expression, so your headshots convey confidence and approachability — two qualities that are especially important in a modern professional headshot.

Getting the headshot right is the first task. But it is not the only one. In a world, full of polished profile pictures, I am also interested in something more enduring: a portrait that may still matter many years later. So, while we create strong, usable images for the purpose that brought you to the studio, I also try to make photographs you may want to keep long after their immediate use has passed — the kind that remain in a family album or on a wall long after the profile picture has been replaced.

My background is not only in photography. For many years I have worked in theatre — as an actor, director, and teacher of acting and directing. In photography, I look for something similar to what I look for in theatre: that exciting moment when a person is simply being present. 

Based in Pittsboro, North Carolina, I work with individual clients throughout the Triangle and with corporate clients around the world. I spend a few months each year in Europe and Asia, shooting for long-standing corporate clients there. And I always love coming back to my home studio for unhurried, thoughtful portrait sessions.
